Therapeutic Art
The Mosaic Art Project is medicinal and powerful vehicle for the girls to express themselves and their journey with mosaic, broken pieces. To relate to making sense out of pieces in their life. To relate to letting go and moving on.
We asked the girls to come to the retreat with a broken piece from their home. Some brought pieces of a broken plate, glass or vase from their home, others; their broken pieces came from their heart.
Each girl wrote a poem about their art piece once it was completed.
Activity:
A poem “Piecing It Together” is read to the group
Each child is given the opportunity to break tile if desired
Each child is to sketch a design for their “mosaic”
Every child is directed to build the “mosaic” on a piece of paper
Every child is encouraged to embellish their piece with beads etc.
Every child will transfer the “mosaic” from the paper to the base and glue/thin set it
Every child will grout their “mosaic”
Every child will further embellish and finish the product when the grout is dry
Each client is to discuss and reflect on their process at the beginning of each session – in the group and in their journal.
Come up with the title for their project/mosaic book
Write a poem for their art piece
At the end of the project each client will present their piece together with a small poem in the closing ceremony.
It was amazing to watch how some of the girls struggled with the old tape playing in their head , “Oh, I’m a terrible artist”. Well, like I said, old tape. Look below at the girls holding their piece.
Tania and Kathryn are amazing artist. I also want to thank Tim and Chris Luker for donating many tiles to create such beauty.
